Why a barcode will not scan after printing
A troubleshooting guide for barcode contrast, margins, scaling, damage, printer quality and incompatible formats.

Start with the final printed label
A code that scans on a bright monitor may fail on paper. The screen is sharp and illuminated; a printer can introduce blur, ink spread, gaps or scaling. Troubleshoot the final label rather than relying on the preview.
Check contrast and background
Dark bars on a light, plain background are the safest arrangement. Coloured backgrounds, photographs, gradients and transparent materials can reduce contrast. Glossy surfaces may create reflections that hide parts of the symbol from the scanner.
Protect the quiet area
A barcode needs clear space around it so a scanner can identify where the symbol begins and ends. Text, borders, logos or another barcode placed too close can interfere. Increase the generator margin and keep the surrounding label design uncluttered.
Look for distortion
Do not resize a raster image by dragging only its width or height. Distortion changes the relationship between bars. Use SVG when the artwork must be resized, or regenerate the code at the required dimensions.
Consider printer and material limits
Very narrow bars may merge on a low-resolution printer. Thermal printers can also produce weak or broken lines when the head is dirty or the darkness setting is incorrect. Paper texture, lamination and curved packaging can all affect the result.
Confirm the format and value
The scanner or software may not support the selected symbology, or it may expect a specific number of characters. Test a known working label from the same system. If that scans and the new label does not, compare format, dimensions and content.
A reliable test sequence
- Print larger with black on white.
- Increase the margin.
- Use SVG or a fresh high-resolution PNG.
- Test a short value.
- Try another scanner.
- Confirm the required barcode standard.
